Have you noticed how many products are on the market now that will add some fiber to your diet? You could spend a small fortune on stuff to mix with water that is clear, flavored, not flavored, and who knows what else just so you can drink it and get your daily dose of fiber. Then there are all the special foods that say they are “high in fiber”. My goodness, they make fiber sound so difficult!

Guess what? For just a few dollars a year you can easily add all the fiber you need to your diet. I learned this a long time ago when my mother was fighting colon cancer. She told me what she found out, and the secret is wheat bran. Unfortunately she did not win her battle, but I’ve been adding a little wheat bran to just about everything I eat since then. Now, this won’t work for those with a wheat allergy, but it will work for everyone else.

Wheat bran has no taste, so you can add a little to just about anything and never notice it. You can purchase it in bulk from any health food store for less than $2 a pound. I use about 2 pounds a year. I’ve got an old grated cheese shaker that I keep in the fridge with wheat bran in it. Anytime I’m cooking, I just add a shake to two to whatever it is. Sure keeps the digestion working the way it should.

What can you add it to? Here’s my short list: bowl of cereal, eggs, meatloaf, pancakes, gravy, grits, hash brown potatoes, mashed potatoes, hamburgers, casseroles, soup, biscuits, banana bread, sandwiches, egg salad, potato salad, and just about anything else that you eat.

But what if you wanted to add both fiber and flavor? Add some oat bran. It gives food a nutty flavor. I add it to some of my quick breads and pancakes. Just be aware that it doesn’t have as much fiber as wheat bran. Also, you will need to keep it refrigerated when you are not using it.

So, don’t spend extra money on fancy stuff to put fiber in your diet. Visit your neighborhood health food store and get some wheat bran and maybe some oat bran. Just add a shake or two to what you are eating and you’ll be good to go.
